There are five regions that make up Long Island; the North Shore, resplendent with magnificent mansions that recall the opulence of a bygone era; the South Shore, mecca for the island's spectator sports and entertainment, and home to the renowned Jones Beach and Fire Island Beaches; Central Suffolk, home to the mega outlet center, Tangers, and unspoiled forest land and natural inlets; the North Fork, with its vineyards (growing in prominence in world markets) and its farms; and the South Fork, also known as "The Hamptons," playground for the rich and famous, with its world famous beaches and charming villages.

TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD TOWN OF NORTH HEMPSTEAD TOWN OF OYSTER BAY
With a population approximating 725,000 people, and a land mass of 142 square miles, the Town of Hempstead is the largest township in the United States.  Comprised of 51 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, it is also home to 65 parks and marinas, Jones Beach and Long Beach and an incredible 2500 miles of city, county, state and federal roads.  Once part of the Town of Hempstead, from which it separated in 1784, The Town of North Hempstead is home to old world mansions like the Sands Point Preserve and Old Westbury Gardens.  The turn of the twentieth century brought the scions of industry to the north shore of Long Island where they built  magnificent homes on huge parcels of land. Well traveled, they often chose the architectural style of the castles of Europe, surrounded by some of the most beautiful gardens the area had seen.  These homes still proudly proclaim the opulence of a bygone era and grace prime acreage on Long Island's Gold Coast.  If you're in the area, they definitely merit a visit.

To the west, the Town of North Hempstead is bordered by the borough of Queens.  Its northern boundary is the Long Island Sound, to the south the Town of Hempstead and the Town of Oyster Bay to the east.

Reaching from the Long Island Sound on the north to the Atlantic Ocean on the south, Oyster Bay occupies the eastern part of Nassau County.  Within its borders lie towns reflecting all the diversity the area is known for. It is home to white sandy beaches, beautiful parks, nature preserves and wildlife sanctuaries.

The Town of Oyster Bay owes its name to the fine oysters once harvested from the waters of the north shore.  Though named by the Dutch, it was recorded in 1639 by David deVries.
In 1899 the towns of Hempstead, North Hempstead and Oyster Bay incorporated and the County of Nassau was born.
